UPEI’s basketball teams gave fans plenty to cheer for this weekend, as they put on a show at the AUS Championship in Halifax.

| Music

The UPEI Department of Music is pleased to announce the award recipients of the 2022 Dr. Frances Gray Performance Competition, which took place on March 3. Alexandra Sorensen, soprano, won first place with a $1,000 scholarship; Olive MacPhail, tuba, second place with a $750 scholarship; and Devyn Collette, saxophone, third place with a scholarship of $500.

UPEI extends a big congratulations to Carolina Del Santo, Lauren Rainford, and head coach Matt Gamblin, of Women’s Basketball, for winning three major 2021–21 AUS awards. The AUS announced its slate of award winners for this season on March 16.

Dozens of UPEI students will gain global skills through the newly launched Global Skills Opportunity project. This work/study abroad opportunity will unlock students’ potential through life-changing global skills and experiences. This offering has been made possible with a $500,000 contribution from the Government of Canada’s Global Skills Opportunity (GSO) program announced in November 2021.

Interim President Greg Keefe confirmed in a message to the campus community that Convocation 2022 will be in-person, subject to PEI Chief Public Health Office guidance in place at the time.

| Department Updates

Dr. Jeff Collins, adjunct professor at UPEI, gave the keynote address at the Royal Canadian Navy’s annual Naval Warfare Officers’ Symposium at CFB Halifax on March 2. He spoke about the need to align Canada’s foreign and defence policies, given Russia’s war in Ukraine, the rise of China, and the relative decline of the United States as a pre-eminent world power.

Dr. Edward Chung, director of Asian Studies and professor of religious studies at UPEI, has been busy. Since 2015, he has published five scholarly books—four monographs and one edited volume, three of which have been published since October 2020.

UPEI congratulates Dr. Margaret Magner, sessional instructor at UPEI and CEO of the PEI Business Women’s Association, on being named one of the top 25 most powerful women in Atlantic Canada by Atlantic Business Magazine.
