| Academics

The University of Prince Edward Island has added a new one-year course-based professional stream to its Master of Applied Health Services Research (MAHSR) program. Previously, students earned their degree through a two-year thesis-based MAHSR-T stream. Now they can choose either it or the one-year MAHSR-P stream.

The UPEI Arts Review group held a book launch on Wednesday, May 1, for its latest publication, Into a New Tongue, a collection of academic and creative writing. Members of the campus community gathered in Schurman Market Square, Don and Marion McDougall Hall, to celebrate the creative skills of UPEI students from various degree programs, and the only printed, student-led publication of its kind at the University.

Every May 5, the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, also called Red Dress Day, is solemnly observed. Throughout UPEI, red dresses were carefully hung by the staff of the Mawi’omi Indigenous Student Centre.

Dr. Wendy Rodgers has been appointed by the UPEI Board of Governors as the seventh President and Vice-Chancellor after a comprehensive 12-month search. She will assume the role on June 1, 2024.

| Atlantic Veterinary College

Dr. Lesley Steele, a graduate of the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), is the winner of the College’s 2023 Atlantic Award of Excellence in Veterinary Medicine and Animal Care.

Canadian criminal defence lawyer James Lockyer, CM, will speak about wrongful convictions in Canada during the Chief Justice Thane A. Campbell Lectureship in Law presentation on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at The Guild, 111 Queen Street, Charlottetown, at 4:30 pm.

Five outstanding leaders will receive honorary degrees, and four graduates will deliver valedictory addresses over four Convocation ceremonies at the University of Prince Edward Island, May 14 to 17. Over 1,200 graduates comprise the Class of 2024.

In an effort to maximize offensive efficiency, the UPEI Women’s Basketball Panthers has made a strategic move by recruiting Naki Alonzo, a traditional pass-first point guard.
