| Atlantic Veterinary College

As part of “Good News Week at UPEI,” the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) is excited to announce the launch of Phase 2 of its AVC Veterinary Teaching Hospital expansion project.

The University of Prince Edward Island launched its new student entrepreneurship hub at an official grand opening event today. Named in honour of UPEI’s former chancellor, the innovation hub will offer unique learning opportunities and programs that support student entrepreneurship and provide access for community partners to connect with on-campus talent.

UPEI Panthers Field Hockey coach Lacey MacLauchlan was the Assistant Coach for Team Canada’s under-17 female team for a recent ten-day tour of the Netherlands. The trip marked her coaching debut with the national program.

| Department Updates

Recently, a few members of the Faculty of Medicine team attended the International Congress on Academic Medicine (ICAM) in Vancouver, which is the premier Canadian meeting for medical schools and medical education with over 1,250 participants. It was fun being one of the new kids on the block, and attendees were very interested in and enthusiastic about what is happening at UPEI.

Paige Campbell, a Bachelor of Environmental Studies student at UPEI, is marking Earth Day, April 22, with a painting of species at risk on PEI.

UPEI is glad to share the news that Dr. Sobia Ali-Faisal has been appointed as the new Director of EDI and Human Rights for the University, effective May 21, 2024. This position is responsible for oversight of the Department of EDI and Human Rights and for advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion within the University community. The University is also pleased to announce that Patti Wheatley has been appointed as the new Human Rights Counsel for UPEI, effective June 3, 2024. This position will provide leadership on all aspects of human rights law and to staff working in sexual violence prevention and response and the administration of the harassment and discrimination complaint process.

Dr. Angelina Weenie, from Sweetgrass Nation, Saskatchewan, has been appointed dean of the UPEI Faculty of Indigenous Knowledge, Education, Research, and Applied Studies (IKERAS) for a five-year term effective July 1, 2024.

| Events

On Wednesday, April 10, six UPEI student teams pitched their business concepts in front of a live audience for a share of $62,000 in prize money during the annual MacLauchlan Panther Pitch Competition. The competition for entrepreneurial undergraduate and graduate students is coordinated each year by UPEI’s Student Entrepreneurship Hub and is part of the Harry W. MacLauchlan Entrepreneurship Program.

The UPEI Panthers Cheer Team ended their season on a high note, becoming national champions for the third consecutive year after competing at the Collegiate Median National Championship division of the CheerExpo National Cheerleading Championship 2024. The event took place from April 5 to 7 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
